Understand the Problem
680,000 people die from suicide globally each year. The causes of suicide are complex. There’s no single reason why people take their own lives, but we do know that by improving overall mental health we can reduce the risk of suicide.
When someone dies from suicide everyone feels bad, we talk about how it might have been different if we had recognized the signs. But when someone is actively suffering with their mental health, it is often perceived as seeking attention and far too often the cry for help is neither heard nor believed. As a people we need to do better.
Be Actively Empathetic
Last year I chose to ride “faceless” during the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Los Angeles as a reminder that we often need to look beyond the surface to help others with unseen challenges in their daily lives.
Create Safe Spaces for Everyone
Teams can’t work effectively without trust. Psychological safety is the belief that people will not be punished for making a mistake, for speaking your mind, for sticking your neck out for someone for fear of having your head cut off. Overly competitive environments, dismissive statements to someones ideas or value sets off alarm bells in the brain that hijacks our core brain functions and ignites the fight or flight response. When these events occur they shut down our ability to think critically, step back with perspective, or apply analytical reasoning. Essentially when we need to have our wits about us most, we lose our minds.
More than 80% of people that seek treatment for depression are treated successfully. (TADS study)
Together we can make a difference. Whether these issues touch you personally or not; we are all grateful for your support. Please consider donating to this cause at any level.
On Sunday the 23rd of May, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember.
Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
