First Responder Mental Health

My family has always had a calling for service. I am a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, my sister is a U.S. Army Veteran, my mother was an EMT and my father worked law enforcement for over 30 years. My father is my hero, it was growing up looking up to him that inspired me to serve my country and it's people at a young age.

 

My father is a 9/11 survivor.

 

My father was a witness to the atrocities of that day. He witnessed things no one should ever have to see. He lost people who he considered brothers. He spent days after digging in the ruins to help save who he can.

 

I always looked up to my father; always appearing tough, and stoic. Despite all of the terrible things he has witnessed, he always gave his 100% as a father, husband and investigator.

 

But as time passed, he explained how it was hard to suppress how he was feeling. He had always did his best to keep strong. But he knew deep down he wasn’t okay.

 

My father sought help. He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

 

The strongest man I know in my life needed help.  He was strong enough to admit he was not okay.

 

There is a stigma in the service community to bottle up and suppress emotions. We witness horrible things and we believe it is expected to be brave and push through. While you might be able to do that for a while, you can only do it for so long.

 

Check in on your buddies, talk about how you feel. It’s okay to not be okay.

Thank you to all that have sponsored me and have contributed donations towards the  cause. It is moving to see the amount of people willing to help donate towards prostate cancer research and men's mental health.

 

This year, I have lost 2 friends to the battle within. It is common for men to hold back their feelings and emotions for numbers of reasons. Men are far less likely to seek therapy or other forms of help. It is so important to take care of yourself mentally and physically. It's okay to not be okay. It’s okay to talk about how you're feeling. Please seek help or call a friend if you’re considering suicide. Please don’t do it.

 

Be strong, hang in there. I’m happy you’re here. It WILL get better!

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Saturday 8th Apr 2023 On Sunday the 21st of May 2023, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
