Riding for a Reason: My First DGR in Cape Town
Thursday 22nd May 2025
On the crisp autumn morning of 18 May 2025, I mounted my motorcycle in Cape Town—not just for a ride, but for a mission. For the first time, I joined the global movement that is the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR), a ride unlike any other, with a purpose far greater than style or spectacle. I rode for the men we’ve lost, the men still fighting, and those silently struggling with mental health.
This cause hits close to home. I’ve lost several loved ones to prostate cancer—each loss a painful reminder of how fragile and precious life is. Right now, a very close friend is in the throes of his battle with this illness, and the toll it takes isn’t just physical. I’ve also witnessed friends and colleagues grapple with mental health challenges, often behind closed doors, with little support. These aren’t just statistics to me—they are names, faces, memories.
Motivated by this trend, I decided to actively support the Movember Movement—to not only raise awareness but also raise funds to save lives. I set a modest goal. I didn’t expect the outpouring of generosity and encouragement that followed. Family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers opened their hearts and wallets, helping me raise $638. To my surprise and great honour, I took the top spot in Cape Town for funds raised—a humbling testament to the collective power of community and shared purpose.
The ride itself was diverse and energetic. Dressed in my dapper best, alongside a sea of fellow riders, each of us carried stories, memories, and missions. We weren’t just a group of motorcyclists—we were a movement. A brotherhood (and sisterhood) united by compassion and a commitment to men’s health.
But this isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning of my journey. I’ve started this ride not only on two wheels but on a path of ongoing advocacy for men’s health—physical, mental, and emotional. The road ahead is long, but I’m committed to riding it, raising awareness, raising funds, and raising my voice.
To everyone who supported me—thank you. Together, we are making a difference. One ride, one conversation, one life at a time.
I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride
Tuesday 25th Mar 2025
On Sunday the 18th of May 2025, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
